CBD Guide: Need to know

Some only talk about it – others take it regularly: We are talking about CBD oil – often advertised as an anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and relaxing agent. In this article you will learn everything about CBD Oil and what you have to consider when buying it.

Among performers and biohackers CBD oil is currently on everyone’s lips. Those who don’t know the oil directly associate it with an intoxicating effect. After all, CBD oil contains a cannabinoid (cannabidiol) extracted from the hemp plant. Contrary to many opinions, cannabidiol (CBD) has nothing to do with the intoxicating effect of the best known cannabinoid called THC. CBD is neither intoxicating nor does it cause euphoric feelings of happiness when taking CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil?

Unfortunately, the cannabidiol contained in CBD oil is often associated with the ingredient THC contained in the hemp plant. CBD and THC are two different mechanisms of action with different effects and properties. We show you why this is so.

By THC we mean the tetrahydrocannabinol contained in the hemp plan, which has been studied for many years for its psychoactive properties. The most obvious property of THC is its depressant and intoxicating effect. The cannabinoid it contains can cause a feeling of well-being and euphoria.

But did you know that THC is not the only active ingredient, but that the hemp plant consists of over 60 different cannabinoids? So far, scientists have only dealt with THC – now CBD, a cannabinoid of the hemp plant synthesized by Raphael Mechoulam, is moving more and more into the spotlight.

Both THC and CBD are now among the best known cannabinoids of the hemp plant, but CBD is neither psychoactive nor intoxicating. The CBD oil available in Germany may contain traces of THC, but with a maximum content of 0.2 percent these are negligible, so that the oil is legally available in Germany. Usually CBD is offered as capsule, liquid for e-cigarettes or in combination with hemp oil.

What is hemp oil?

Hemp oil is not a special oil, but a generic term for oils produced from hemp. Mostly hemp oil is a particularly high-quality vegetable oil, which is produced by pressing hemp seeds.

These oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Because of these properties, hemp oil is often used as a basis for CBD oil.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

CBD products are currently on the rise. Not because they have an intoxicating effect, but because they can help optimize the body. But how does this effect come about?

The mode of action of CBD is not easy to understand and has not yet been fully researched, but the so-called endocannabinoid system can contribute to a better understanding.

Roughly speaking, the endocannabinoid system is a part of the nervous system. It consists mainly of the receptors C1 and C2. There are also other receptors such as GPR18, GPR119 and GPR55.

CB1 receptors are mainly found in nerve cells, for example in your brain, where they regulate the release of different neurotransmitters (for example serotonin and dopamine). CB1 receptors are also found in the intestinal and nerve cells.

In contrast to CB1 receptors, CB2 receptors are found in the cells that strengthen your immune system and are responsible for the formation and breakdown of bones.

In general, the endocannabinoid system can influence the following bodily functions:

Motor function
Thinking
emotional behavior
Feeling of pain
Cardiovascular system
Eating behaviour
Immune System

By and large, the endocannabinoid system works on the lock-and-key principle. Signalling molecules dock to the receptors and thus stimulate an action of the endocannabinoid system.

Recent study results suggest that the CB1 receptor may help to erase negative memories. The study of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry, which was conducted with knockout mice without CB1 receptors, showed that the animals had a much harder time to forget negative experiences.1 Consequently, endocannabinoids could possibly play an important role in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
